Project Description

Logos need to go through rounds of refining before they’re ready because, in theory, once your logo is decided you can’t change it without a massive overhaul which can affect your branding strategy. A logo is the face of your company, if people start to see a different face, they will start to doubt how legitimate or organized your business is.

All of this information can be conveyed via a meeting, or in a design brief. Preparing this information and compiling it will save you time and frustration with your designer, and they will definitely appreciate the thought you’ve put into it. Afterall, your logo is the start of your branding strategy.

Communicate Your Idea

The start of all your branding material begins at the logo. You’ve got your million dollar idea and the next move is to get a logo for your company. Most new business owners go in having a vague idea of what they want based on their industry, which is an excellent starting point for a graphic design.

Adjectives and Verbs

Designers are relatively easy to find now, especially if you’re using a crowdsourced service like Hatchwise, but you can potentially waste a lot of time if you do not have your vision thoroughly thought out.

Before you hire a designer or put a project out, make sure your mission statement is solid. It’s wonderful to be flexible, and you need flexibility as a start-up to find your business niche, but something needs to ground your vision.Adjectives and verbs from that mission statement will give the designer an idea of what tone the logo should imply. It’s the designer’s job to take words and ideas and interpret them visually.

Colors and Design

Consider colors you would like. What are your competitors doing? Are there certain colors that go with your adjectives? Try to narrow the list down from any color, to a few. Try to imagine what you want to put your logo on as well, because something like a lime green image on a white background isn’t going to look good on white printer paper (if you can even see it in the first place). Be open to the idea that you will at least need a color version and black and white version of your logo.
